Acne

Acne is swelling of the skin that causes spots, redness and quite often discomfort. It is caused by dead skin cells and grease blocking the pores or hair follicles and becoming infected. It typically occurs on the face, back and upper chest. The condition varies in severity from barely noticeable blackhead spots to obtrusive pus-filled whiteheads.

Most people experience acne at some time in their life. Hormonal changes during puberty and pregnancy can contribute to the condition or it can develop later in life. It is usually a mild condition which resolves itself if careful hygiene practices are observed. A balanced diet and drinking plenty of water will also help reduce the symptoms. Only in about 15% of cases does the condition require further medical treatment.

In severe or persistent cases, where the patient is quite often self-conscious and distressed at the way they appear, there are a variety of over the counter and prescription medicines that can help. These medications work by either unblocking the pores, reducing the amount of grease or sebum produced by the skin, reducing the inflammation or fighting the bacteria. The most common over the counter treatments contain benzoyl peroxide - a chemical which cleanses and dries out the skin causing it to shed the surface layer of dead cells. In rare cases prescription antibiotics may be required.
